Leadership
The City of Houston, under the leadership of former Mayor Annise Parker, created the Houston Forensic Science Center (HFSC) to examine and provide scientific analysis of evidence for the Houston Police Department (HPD). On April 3, 2014, management of HPD’s Crime Laboratory, Crime Scene Unit and parts of its Identification Division transferred to HFSC.
HFSC is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors appointed by Houston’s mayor and confirmed by the Houston City Council. The current chairwoman is Dr. Stacey Mitchell, DNP, RN, a clinical associate professor at the Texas A&M College of Nursing. The board receives advice and guidance when needed from a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) largely made up of scientists.
Meetings of the HFSC board are open to the public. Nearly all meetings are held the second Friday of each month in the Houston City Council Annex Chambers at 900 Bagby Street in downtown Houston. Board meeting minutes are posted on the HFSC website after they are approved.
