Firearms

The firearms section analyzes and interprets firearms-related evidence. Examiners also function test firearms and microscopically examine bullet and cartridge case evidence in the hopes of determining whether a firearm is linked to one or more crimes. The section also restores firearm serial numbers. The section also uploads images into the ATF’s National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), the firearms database. Some HFSC firearms examiners are authorized to provide ATF-approved NIBIN training. Firearms examiners are able to reach findings from a range of conclusions. Since the firearms section began ballistic imaging in 1997, it has linked more than 3,000 crimes to others they were not previously known to be associated with, making it one of the most successful ballistic imaging centers in the world.
