The Houston Forensic Science Center has changed its corporate address to a downtown
Fannin Street office building that is now home to three of its nine forensic disciplines
and several administrative divisions.
The four-year lease for the space in 1301 Fannin Street is meant to provide temporary
relief for HFSC as it expands its services and begins to design and provide staff with
space that is appropriate for a state-of-the-art forensic facility. This corporate move is a
major step in HFSC’s separation from the Houston Police Department (HPD.) It is also
part of the long-term vision of HFSC’s Board of Directors.
At the moment, the more than 27,000-square foot space at 1301 Fannin holds HFSC’s
Digital Forensic, Forensic Audio/Video and Crime Scene Units, as well as its Finance
and Training Divisions.
HFSC is a local government corporation that provides forensic services to the City of
Houston and some other local agencies. HFSC is overseen by a Board of Directors
appointed by the Mayor of Houston and confirmed by the Houston City Council. Its
management structure is designed to be responsive to a 2009 recommendation by the
National Academy of Sciences that called for crime laboratories to be independent of
law enforcement and prosecutorial branches of government.
HFSC currently operates in nine forensic disciplines. The Center’s new corporate
address is 1301 Fannin St., Suite 170, Houston, Texas 77002.
