Dr. Dayong Lee, manager of the Houston Forensic Science Center’s Toxicology Section,
has been awarded the Irving Sunshine Award by the American Academy of Forensic
Sciences.
The Irving Sunshine Award, named after an internationally renowned forensic
toxicologist, is one of the most prestigious in the field. Dr. Lee joins a select group of
toxicologists who have received the award since its start in 1988.
“I am truly honored that I received the award,” Dr. Lee said. “This recognition further
motivates me to make positive contributions to the field of forensic toxicology.”
Dr. Lee received her doctorate in toxicology in 2013 from the University of Maryland,
and has a master’s degree in forensic science from the University of Illinois. She has
recently been named guest editor of the Journal of Analytical Toxicology 2017 Special
Issue.
Dr. Lee joined HFSC in 2015 as manager of the Toxicology Section and has overseen the
implementation of new methods and technologies in the discipline.
“This award puts Dr. Lee in the same category as some of the best forensic toxicologists
in the nation, and we are proud she is a part of the HFSC team,” said Dr. Peter Stout,
HFSC’s CEO and president.
HFSC is a local government corporation that provides forensic services to the City of
Houston and other local agencies. HFSC is overseen by a Board of Directors appointed
by the Mayor of Houston and confirmed by the Houston City Council. Its management
structure is designed to be responsive to a 2009 recommendation by the National
Academy of Sciences that called for crime laboratories to be independent of law
enforcement and prosecutorial branches of government.
HFSC operates in eight forensic disciplines.
